On Conversation

Conversation here in the Pines, and in my house in particular, seems to center around several subjects. First of all, there is current events. Thank God, because I am fairly literate and interested where this particular topic is concerned. Also, fashion… and again I can hold my own, naming designers and scandals and hideous outfits that I have seen in magazines and in person. But the apartment renovation thing? Tedious and bores me to tears. I think because I don’t own my apartment I don’t really care to hear how others are altering theirs. They are doing so, after all, in ways that are cost prohibitive for me or that my landlord would not appreciate. For example, one housemate just now pointed out that he is spending “ten thousand dollars on carpeting.”

We would never mention figures in the south. If there was new carpeting, it would just happen.

Two other housemates this weekend (it’s only Saturday) have already mentioned past or future apartment renovations. One cleverly bundled mention of last year’s renovation with news of his architect’s celebrity boyfriend, who came with him to inspect the work. And discuss ideas for future renovations. I take care to beautify my apartment, don’t get me wrong, but it’s more akin to the Profitt residence in the Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell laugh riot Overboard than any celebrity showcase (“We moved here… deliberately?”).

It’s my solemn vow that, should I ever renovate anything, it will just happen.
